Leading Well: Supporting Our Student Leaders Through November’s Challenges

Updated: Nov 20

November is traditionally a demanding month for Students’ Unions. The initial buzz of Welcome Week has faded, and the excitement of new officers stepping into their roles over the summer feels a distant memory, while the Christmas break is still weeks away. Shorter daylight hours mean many are arriving and leaving work in the dark, and it’s often during this time of year that sabbatical officers face some of their greatest challenges.

This is when a change of scenery and a chance to reconnect can make a real difference. It’s an opportunity to meet others in similar roles, share insights, and find new perspectives that re-energise officers for the months ahead. We’re pleased to see sector partners like NUS and Wonkhe hosting events in November, and at Coole Insight, we’re proud to join them.

Each November, we host our Leading Well event, this year on Thursday, 14th November, at Westminster SU. This annual gathering invites members of our Student Officer Support Programme to network, discuss ongoing challenges, and hear from influential leaders both inside and outside the sector. The focus of Leading Well is always on wellbeing, supporting student leaders as they navigate the pressures and demands of a rewarding yet challenging role. This space encourages open conversation in a supportive and non-judgmental environment while offering a robust learning experience. As in previous years, we’ll discuss the complexities of leadership, how officers can care for their own wellbeing, and the support networks available to them in their roles.

Our past events have featured keynote speakers, networking sessions, and panels with former sabbatical officers who bring invaluable advice to those currently in the role. We’re especially thrilled to welcome Professor Peter Bonfield, Vice Chancellor of the University of Westminster, as this year’s keynote speaker. Professor Bonfield will share his insights on leadership within a large organisation, offering lessons that officers and representatives across the UK can apply to their own responsibilities.

For the first time, Leading Well will be open to the wider community. This year, the event welcomes all students’ union officers and members within Independent Higher Education, and we’re excited to bring together a diverse group of student leaders for what promises to be an excellent experience.
